Clifton Davis

Davis is an actor, singer, composer, producer and minister, truly a renaissance man of the arts. For more than 30 years Clifton Davis has shared his unique gifts with audiences around the world. Dr. Davis is probably best known for his 5-year stint as Reverend Reuben Gregory on the popular television series, "Amen."   Most recently, Davis portrayed Prinicpal Flanagan in the Disney film, “Halloweentown High.” He also portrayed Mayor Tyrone Smalls in the Al Pacino film, "Any Given Sunday."   Four other films have been recently added to his credits: “The Painting,” “Max Keeble’s Big Move,” “The Climb” and the Whoopi Goldberg film, "Kingdom Come."  Dr. Davis is currently the host of two Cable TV series: "Gospel Superfest-Backstage Pass," a syndicated variety/talk-show airing on Trinity Broadcasting Network and “C.A.T.S.” (“Christian Artist Talent Search”) currently airing on INSP-TV.   In addition, Dr. Davis has been a guest star on such shows as “Half & Half,” “American Dreams,” "The Jamie Foxx Show," "Living Single," "Sparks," "Malcolm & Eddie," “Grace Under Fire,” the award winning drama series, "Party of Five," “The Sentinel” on UPN and “The Gregory Hines Show” on CBS-TV and "In The House."  He can also be seen hosting “Praise the Lord” on the Trinity Broadcasting Network on a regular basis.  Also, Davis is currently preparing the production of a new gospel musical titled, “Strangers and Angels”.

His other television credits include starring in "The Melba Moore & Clifton Davis Show" and "That's My Mama appearances on "The John Laroquette Show,” “Vegas," "The Love Boat," "Police Story," as well as such major talk shows as "The Tonight Show," "Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee," "Oprah," and "The Arsenio Hall Show."  He has also hosted and served as presenter on numerous award shows and television specials.  Over the years he has guest-starred in such made-for-TV movies as "Dream Date," "Little Ladies of the Night," "Cindy," "Murder at the Superdome," "Scott Joplin," "Don't Look Back" and "The Night the City Screamed."

On Broadway he has appeared in "Hello Dolly,” "Jimmy Shine" starring Dustin Hoffman, and "The Engagement Baby." Davis received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical in 1972 as one of the stars of Broadway's Tony Award-winning hit musical, "Two Gentlemen of Verona."  Then, in 1994, Dr. Davis returned to the New York Theater appearing in the hit drama, "Hapgood" at The Lincoln Center Theater.  He has also been seen Off-Broadway in "How to Steal an Election," Lorraine Hansberry's "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black," Pulitzer Prize-winning "No Place to be Somebody," and many other productions.  Davis won a Theatre World Award for his performance in "Do It Again."  

In September 2002, Dr. Davis Co-Starred with Phylicia Rashad and Diahann Carroll in the Pasadena Playhouse Production of “Blue,” a drama which broke all box office records for the 70 year history of the theater.  Over the years he has toured starring in such shows as "Guys and Dolls," "Daddy Goodness," "Celebration," "Pal Joey" with Lena Horne, and Maya Angelou's "And Still I Rise."

As a composer, Davis received a Grammy nomination for his hit song, "Never Can Say Goodbye."  As a singer and recording artist, he has enjoyed success with his album "Gospel Greats," on Benson Records, and has performed in concert all over the nation.  In 2001, he founded Clifton Davis Productions, a production and recording company with vision, expertise and a promising future.

Davis holds a BA in Theology from Oakwood College, Huntsville, Alabama, and a Master of Divinity degree from Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan.  He is also the recipient of two honorary Doctorate degrees; a Doctor of Ministry Degree and a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Lincoln University. 

Over the years, Dr. Davis has become a celebrated motivational speaker, having been the keynote speaker for such organizations as the S.C.L.C, the UNCF, the NAACP Freedom Fund of South Carolina, National Black Meeting Planners, 100 Black Men of America, the National Black Educators convention and more than 125 universities and schools.  He is the recipient of more than 150 awards and citations for his service to such organizations as the UNCF, the NAACP Easter Seals and other national and local social or civic organizations. 

Dr. Davis served two years as Associate Pastor at the Loma Linda University Church in California, and he is the co-founder and former co-pastor of Welcome Christian Center in Huntington Beach, CA.  His ministry spans more than 20 years during which he has evangelized throughout the nation, introducing thousands of people to the love of God. 

From January 1995 to September 1996, Dr. Davis served as Vice Chancellor for Development & Planning at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. Dr. Davis also served as Honorary Membership Chairman of the National Parent Teacher's Association from 1989-91 and has served on the advisory council for The Children's Defense Fund.  Dr. Davis is an avid golfer, licensed pilot and a certified scuba diver.  However, his greatest loves are his God, his wife, Monica, and his two children: 25-year-old son, Christian, and 21-year-old daughter, Holly.
